BUG: Online Check Function Broken For Google SERPs
Google’s search results pages have changed significantly this week which has unfortunately caused the Google search results data retrieval to break in v1 of DupeFree Pro.
This new Google SERPs update means that now all three Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing) will not show results counts for the ‘Online’ check function. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience this may cause. (The ‘LSI’ button and all other standard internal core functions of DFP still work of course).
Now, I have some bad news and some good news about this…
The bad news is that these bugs in the current version of DupeFree Pro will not be fixed. DFP v1 is a basic application that is ultimately just a moderately improved version of a tool we exclusively used ourselves for years before releasing it publicly. We released DFP v1 mainly as a marketing test and to get a measure at being a software publisher.
Releasing DFP publicly has been a very enjoyable experience and has helped us learn a lot about software development & support. Its been very rewarding and we’ve met some fantastic and kind people through it. DFP has become close to our hearts and is now, more than ever, an area we want to focus on and provide real value to. Over the last 3 years we have seen the demand for DFP grow as well as the need to provide a better, more robust solution, and so the current version desperately needs to be replaced. Which brings me on to the good news…
DFP v1’s bug’s will not be a problem for much longer because it is currently being phased out. It will be replaced in the next 3/4 months by the bigger, better, ALL-NEW DFP Version 2! V2 is a complete and total re-make of DFP and is by far the biggest project we have undertaken to date. As I write a team of programmers are working on it full time and have been for months already! We have listened to and taken on board all of your feedback from over the last few years so I’m pretty sure you will like what you see when it is ready. So, keep your eyes peeled for more info over the next few months.
Thanks for using DFP, and again apologies for the inconvenience of the online function no longer working. But lets look forward to a much brighter new future for DupeFree Pro and us, its users!
Of course we always welcome your feedback, suggestions and comments so click here to tell us all about them.
Kind regards,
Mike
UPDATE: (19 July 2010)
Unfortunately it looks as though the recent Google updates have now also affected the LSI tool in DFP. So now both the online check and the LSI tool are unable to retrieve results from the search engines. DupeFree Pro v2 will of course rectify this and is expected to have its initial release around the end of August so it’s not too long now.
To help fill this gap until DFP v2 is available, I have located a free tool online that does the same function as the current DFP LSI button. At the link below you will find a tool provided by goRank that retrieves the bold related terms within the top 1000 results from a Google tilde search:

I hope this free web based tool helps until DFP v2 is released. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused by the LSI button no longer working in DFP.

Here are a couple of third party online checker tools. They should help ease the loss of the DFP online checker until DupeFree Pro v2 is released.
These tools are not perfect (i.e. they don’t provide search results numbers). However, they offer a somewhat similar functionality to the original DFP online checker so they can be used in the mean time:

2) http://searchenginereports.net/articlecheck.aspx
(Please note we are in no way affiliated with these tools and cannot be held liable for any issues or losses as a result of using them.)
I hope these help.
Kind regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the great Free tool and the news about v2.
While v1 was Free, i was wondering if v2 would remain free for us, which i’m anticipating that it will not be.
i’m new to dup, but what’s the difference between dfp and copyscape? do they pretty much do the samething, but dfp is free while copyscape charges like 5c per verification?
Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your kind words
I’m pleased to tell you that v2 will have a free version that honors the current set of features in v1 as well as adding some additional free functionality. So this means everyone will benefit by this move to v2. We didn’t want to leave anyone behind.
Regarding the difference between DFP and Copyscape. I can only talk about DFP v1 at the moment as I’m trying to keep things a little ’secret’ until v2 is nearer release. But basically, the difference is simply that DFP picks 5 sentences from your article at random and performs a “phrase search” on each sentence at the 3 main search engines (Google, Yahoo & Bing). Copyscape does a much more thorough search on an article by breaking the article up in to all possible 3 word shingles (3 word groups) and checks each shingle against Google using their API. This means they search an entire article for matches at Google. They have to pay to query the Google API and so they pass that cost on to the user (plus a little profit to keep their service running I imagine).
That’s the difference between Copyscape and DFP v1’s online check in a nutshell. Of course the online check is currently broken in v1 right now but v2 isn’t too far away now!
I can say that the online check in v2 will be a lot more usable and we plan to have something that will work with Copyscape as well. More details will be released as we get closer to release.
Thanks for using DFP!
Kind regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Appreciate the education on DFP and Copyscape! Wow it can get technical…
Anyway, i’m looking forward to v2 both the free and paid version.
Also, just received the email today on LSI, i think it’s a great feature, i have been using that even before the email, i think it’s been under utilized.
there’s a great LSI tool by Dr Andy Williams - Web Content Studio (free feel to snip this if this is sensitive), but that’s kind of pricey, so i was elated when i stumbled firstly on dfp, and then 2ndly on the LSI tool! i immediately extracted some LSI KWs and sent them to my writer.
Once again, thanks Mike!
Kind regards,
Andy

I have just tripped across your software - largely because I am panicking about the June 2nd Google changes and the consequent drops in rankings etc and am dramatically changing articles left right & center.
Really good guys - the best of the five systems I have tested over the past two days, with the most functionality and the most informative comparisons of anyone, not to mention the best info behond the software - i.e.e here!
Looking forward to the next release …
By the by, have not got the LSI checker to work, but that could be for all kinds of reasons!
Rock on guys - this really is a brilliant piece of work.

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your kind comments. I’m glad you enjoy DFP and find it useful. I hope you will find v2 even more useful
Regarding the LSI tool, it appears the recent Google update has now also affected this as it is no longer retrieving data. I have updated the post above to reflect this as well as provide a alternative free solution we can use in the meantime until DFP v2 is available.
Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience cause by the LSI tool no longer working. The good news is it shouldn’t be too long now until DFP v2 is ready.
Thanks again for your kind words, it’s comments like yours that makes this project so enjoyable!
Kind regards,
Mike
