This new Google SERPs update means that now all three Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing) will not show results counts for the ‘Online’ check function. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience this may cause. (The ‘LSI’ button and all other standard internal core functions of DFP still work of course).

Now, I have some bad news and some good news about this…

The bad news is that these bugs in the current version of DupeFree Pro will not be fixed. DFP v1 is a basic application that is ultimately just a moderately improved version of a tool we exclusively used ourselves for years before releasing it publicly. We released DFP v1 mainly as a marketing test and to get a measure at being a software publisher.

Releasing DFP publicly has been a very enjoyable experience and has helped us learn a lot about software development & support. Its been very rewarding and we’ve met some fantastic and kind people through it. DFP has become close to our hearts and is now, more than ever, an area we want to focus on and provide real value to. Over the last 3 years we have seen the demand for DFP grow as well as the need to provide a better, more robust solution, and so the current version desperately needs to be replaced. Which brings me on to the good news…

DFP v1’s bug’s will not be a problem for much longer because it is currently being phased out. It will be replaced in the next 3/4 months by the bigger, better, ALL-NEW DFP Version 2! V2 is a complete and total re-make of DFP and is by far the biggest project we have undertaken to date. As I write a team of programmers are working on it full time and have been for months already! We have listened to and taken on board all of your feedback from over the last few years so I’m pretty sure you will like what you see when it is ready. So, keep your eyes peeled for more info over the next few months.

Thanks for using DFP, and again apologies for the inconvenience of the online function no longer working. But lets look forward to a much brighter new future for DupeFree Pro and us, its users!

UPDATE: (19 July 2010)

Unfortunately it looks as though the recent Google updates have now also affected the LSI tool in DFP. So now both the online check and the LSI tool are unable to retrieve results from the search engines. DupeFree Pro v2 will of course rectify this and is expected to have its initial release around the end of August so it’s not too long now.

To help fill this gap until DFP v2 is available, I have located a free tool online that does the same function as the current DFP LSI button. At the link below you will find a tool provided by goRank that retrieves the bold related terms within the top 1000 results from a Google tilde search:

I hope this free web based tool helps until DFP v2 is released. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused by the LSI button no longer working in DFP.

After a fair few previous announcements about this (embarrassingly stretching back quite sometime I might add!) we have now actually committed a sizeable amount of time and budget to this project.

This next version of DFP is going to be a complete rewrite (no pun intended!) and a huge improvement. The development cost will be significantly higher than any other project we have done so far and so before we embark on this we want to be absolutely sure that we actually know what it is YOU want out of DFP v2. This is extremely important because we really do not want to spend a load of time and money developing something nobody really wants!

We do, of course, have some ideas we consider to be fantastic, but that’s not enough, we need your feedback on these ideas to be sure you would like them. …So, in order to achieve this we’d like to be so bold as to ask for little bit of your time… not much, just a little…

When the ‘online’ button is pressed the systems default browser (when set as either FireFox or Internet Explorer) gives the error message:

File not found

Firefox can’t find the file at /C:/Program Files/DupeFree Pro/SearchResults.html.
* Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
* Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

In order to fix the issue you simply need to make Windows run DFP under system administrator mode. This gives DFP the necessary permissions it needs in order for the online feature to work.

The solution below is for Windows Vista as this is the OS that has been effected the most. However, the fix should be much the same in both Windows XP & Windows 7.

To fix this problem in Vista simply do the following:

1. locate the DupeFree Pro.exe file where it is installed on your PC. (the default location is: C:\Program Files\DupeFree Pro\DupeFreePro.exe)
2. Right click on the DupeFreePro.exe file and click ‘Run as administrator’ on the pop-up menu.
3. Click ‘allow’ if a windows warning message appears.
4. You should now be able to run DFP with the online feature working.

You can also permanently set the ‘run as administrator’ mode for DFP saving you from having to run DFP in this way every time. To do this simply do the following:

1. Right click on the DupeFreePro.exe file and click on ‘properties’ in the pop-up menu.
2. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab in the dialogue box.
3. Under the ‘privilege level’ section select the check box next to ‘Run this program as an administrator’.
4. Click ‘ok’
5. Now simply run DupeFree Pro like normal and the online feature should work automatically. Note you may still have to click ‘allow’ when a windows warning message pops up each time DFP is launched.

This should fix the problem for anyone experiencing this. If you try the above and still have the problem, get in contact with me via the helpdesk email over here and I’ll help you out.

Google however is still working fine and the LSI button is also operating well.

The ‘online’ check feature of DFP will occasionally stop working for a Search Engine if they suddenly change the way their SERPs are output. This change renders DFP unable to pickup their SERPS totals. We have to update DFP in order to accommodate these changes as they happen.

The current DFP update is in the works. However, it is taking a bit longer than expected because its a major overhaul. This new version will be launched with a whole new setup through our new IM software brand.
